Hume Street

17 dec. 2013 — 29 jan. 2014

In Snapshot, Canberra based artist Sean Davey's exhibition focused on a  proud row of colourful, well kept weatherboard homes is nestled on Hume Street between Finlay Road and Lansdowne Street in Goulburn.

I have long admired these homes, mainly due to their modesty and trimmed front lawns. I had thought about photographing these homes on numerous drives as I came into Goulburn on my way to Sydney or on the return journey back to Canberra. At about four in the afternoon on a clear day, especially in the winter months, the sun shines directly on this row of homes and highlights the clean, strong colours of each. The homes on Hume Street appear similar in size and design, yet all are subtly different. Some are wider than others; the chimneys on some homes are at the front, while on others they are on the sides. Most of the homes have their front doors centred in the middle. There is however, an overall feeling of uniformity between them, one that presents a positive sense of community spirit and togetherness.

Davey is a professional photographers who specialised in photojournalism and documentary-style photography.  Davey's photographs have been exhibited at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, The State library of NSW and in numerous groups and solo exhibitions.  Davey teaches photography at photoAccess and the Canberra Insitute of Technology.
