Norman Lindsay (1879-1969), artist, cartoonist, accomplished amateur boxer and writer is widely regarded as one of Australia's most loved artists, producing a vast body of work in different media, including pen drawing, etching, watercolour, oil and sculptures. Lindsay found great notoriety in his career, not least for his classic children's story The Magic Pudding which was both written and illustrated by him.

His often salacious and risqué subject matter, featuring sumptuous nudes, mythical beings and reimagined historical scenes was highly controversial for its time. Often soft, sensual and elusive, the images charmed their audience whilst addressing dark and challenging concepts.

In 1994 Lindsay was very much in the Australian national consciousness when Sam Neill played him for the film Sirens which was set and filmed primarily at Lindsay's Faulconbridge home. The film is also notable as the movie debut of Australian supermodel Elle Macpherson.

This original oil painting ‘Woman with Satyr’ came into the possession of the NSW Police Force over 30 years ago as suspected stolen property during the course of a criminal investigation. Attempts to locate its owner have been unsuccessful. It is now presented on loan to GRAG for the public to enjoy.
