Philip's practice is a painterly exploration that favours hybridity. The work is a weave or a pulse of unexpected elements playing together like a strange, challenging yet mesmerising chord. By incorporating multiple styles, techniques and content into his paintings, Philip explores the tensions between masculinity, nature, technology and the built environment. By blurring the borders of painterly elements, weaving together opposites and disparities, and layering multiple histories, the artist works to mediate these tensions and offers a form of healing within the margins he explores. In this way Philip sees his work metaphorically as bridges and believes in seeking unity over division.
