Animals in the Collection

1 September - 1 October 2011

Animals have frequently been drawn and painted by artists, often as a full portrait for their adoring owners. However, they’re not always the main subject of the art work. Sometimes, it takes a bit of detective work to notice them in the background as part of the scenery or they’ve been included in the image because they convey a particular message, draw your attention to a different aspect of the image or they’re being used as a metaphor for a hidden meaning.
There’s a bit of all of this in the GRAG collection which also covers a range of artists and a large number of etchings by John Olsen.
